Project: Update a fairytale in 2015
Hansel and Gretel
Once upon a time there was a sixteen-year-old teenage girl, who was pregnant with twins. The little babies, named Hansel and Gretel, were born cheerful and healthy in a small hospital on the edge of a big city. The father of the little ones turned away when he heard about that message. And even her friends left her alone. But the mother of the twins was glad that she had her mom, who cared for her and for her babies. They lived all together in a little tiny house near the big city. While the new mom cared lovingly for her little son Hansel and for her little daughter Gretel, her own mother worked to get money for the family. She was busy as a bee, because she was working, cooking and buying the food for everyone. But she was sick and a few years later she died because of a heart attack.
From that day the young mother was on her own to take care of her children. Unfortunately she had no job, no friends and no other family members who could have helped her. She tried hard, but there was no way to give her children a good life. Recently she decided to put them into an orphanage in the big city. It was hard for her to let them go, but she had no choice. That was a bitter pill to swallow for her, because she loved her children so much and she worked hard to care for her children, but it wasn’t good enough.
When they went into the orphanage they got to know the other poor children and the care takers in this house. Everything seemed to be okay, but nevertheless Gretel felt alone and lost and her heart was filled with sadness. Her mother didn’t contact them somehow. There was no phone call, no mail and no postcard. Gretel was crying a lot, but Hansel wouldn’t give up. After a few nights in the orphanage he knew how everything works and had the perfect plan. He knew were to find the flashlight, when the care taker were asleep, and where to find the maps and the key for the outside door. Now he had the possibility to break out with Gretel and go back to their mother.
As brave as a lion Hansel took Gretel with him on the dangerous way to their old home. They passed a lot of homeless people, fought with some wild rats and escaped from a thief. But nothing could have stopped them. Finally they got to the little tiny house near the big city and couldn’t believe what they saw. There was a big sign in front of the house which said “for sale”. They looked into the window, but everything in there was as black as coal. They ran to the bell and rang it as often as they could, screamed as loud as they could and knocked on the door as loud as they could. Nothing happened. Nobody opened the door. It was hopeless, their mom wasn’t there anymore.
They sat down in the front of the door. Gretel started crying but Hansel talked to her, that they would find a way to meet their mother again. Gretel didn’t know how, but she believed her brother. And for now they were going back to their orphanage.
While the time passed in the orphanage Hansel was trying to get more information about the new address of their mother. But there was no way to find out. Hansel and Gretel tried to accept that they would never see their mother again like everyone said. The only luck that could happen to them would be an adoption. By the time they learned to behave and to pretend to be nice and polite, if an interested adopter came.
The day came when an interested adopter went to their orphanage. Hansel and Gretel behaved as nice and polite as they learned and both of them got adopted. They were so happy and every other child was a little bit jealous, but nevertheless they felt happy for them. The care taker replied as often as she could that Hansel and Gretel would cut the mustard. They packed their few things together and left with the widow, who adopted them.
While they went to her house by car, the widow ask them some questions and let the children talk. They drove towards the countryside and finally there was one house standing alone framed by the forest. There was a dog as big as a fawn standing in front of the house. Gretel was scared of him immediately. They got into the house and the widow showed them the wonderful room which was provided to be theirs. Gretel sat down on one of the comfortable beds and thought she was in heaven.
Suddenly the widow grabbed one arm of Hansel and one arm of Gretel and pulled them out of the room. “You are not going to sleep here and you won’t have a nice time here, because I want you to work for me! Only when you work diligent you will get food and water!” She threw them down the stairs to the dark basement which hadn’t any windows and shouted to them that they can start right now to wash and to iron her laundry, to dust, to vacuum and to polish her silverware in the basement. After that they could come upstairs to clean the bathrooms, to mow the lawn, to wash the dishes, to groom the windows and to feed the dog.
Gretel was so frightened that she burst out crying. Hansel tried to calm her down, but it didn’t work. One moment later the widow opened the door to the basement and screamed angrily: ”Clam up! And don’t just sit there like a bump on a log!”. Hansel and Gretel just stared at her and her dog beside her. Grooooooooowl. Both were so afraid of the widow and her dog that they started working immediately. The widow slammed the door shut behind her.
For a few moments they just worked, but after that Gretel broke down crying again. She was so sad and so afraid. Then the door opened again, the widow came down to them and slap, slap. Gretel fell down on the cold floor with red cheeks. The dog barked as loud as he could and the widow yelled: “You both won’t get food or water today! There is a possibility to get breakfast tomorrow, if you keep cleaning the whole night!”. Then the widow left with her dog.
Hansel and Gretel remained silent, while they were working the whole night. Unexpectedly Hansel found a video camera in the big disorder and had an idea.
On the next day the twins behaved like the day before and the widow was angry, impatient and violent again. But something was different. Hansel put the the video camera on and recorded everything. Even when the twins were exhausted and tired, they got hope again. With the wonderful thought to get out of this situation soon they fell asleep on some old blankets in the basement.
The next day they woke up early and hid under the stairs. When the widow opened the door to check on the children and their work, she was bewildered that she didn’t see them. She went down the stairs with her dog to look for them. While she started searching in the basement, Hansel and Gretel came out of their hiding place and crept up the stairs with the video camera. When they were by the door to the basement the widow heard them, turned around and screamed. Immediately the twins slammed the door and locked it. They heard the screams of the widow and the barking of the dog.
Now they ran outside, grabbed the two bicycles leaning on the house wall and started riding. Nothing could stop them right now. Finally they got to their old orphanage and explained everything to the care taker. They showed her the videotape as proof. The care taker was convinced and called the police. A few moments later the doorbell rang. “That must be the police!”, the care taker said. But it wasn’t. In front of them stood their mother. “Mom?”, the twins asked at the same time and ran into her arms. “Why did you never contact us and where do you live now?”, the twins asked excitedly after a big hug. The mother answered: “I didn’t contact you, because I thought it would hurt you too much. I thought it would be better for you to be in a clear situation. I felt so bad that I had to leave you here and I am really sorry about that. But now everything is gonna be fine. I got a job and a cheap little apartment in the city were we can live together in peace.”
The old widow went to prison, because of fraud and child endangerment and Hansel and Gretel were happier than ever before and lived with their mother happily ever after.
